Cullen Bunn impressed me with his other Oni Press work The Sixth Gun along with his other work at Marvel. A Viking horror book with demons and witchcraft? The Scrivener like? Hit the jump for more.

Evil Dead is a seminal classic in the annals of horror. Sam Raimi's DIY ethos and desire to make a love letter to the genre he loved inspired countless filmmakers after him to enter into the genre. It launched the career of Bruce Campbell and spawned an entire fanbase known as "Deadites". So, now we have a big studio remake with a ginormous budget tossed at it? Does it live up to the moniker?

One of those rare things to find these days with most mainstream genre films is that sense of suspense, the reliance on more practical effects and letting the setting and atmosphere dictate the pacing and ultimately, lead to the biggest of scares. Mama is an interesting sort of beast then. It is, on one hand, structured in most part like one of those films. We are given a rather well-developed back story before we really dive into the story itself. The reveal of the titular spectre is not given too early nor is it lacking when we do finally see the ghoul. There are scenes that are just dripping with a awful dread and clearly something being out of sorts.

2012 has actually been a fairly decent year for mainstream horror. I tend to stick with the films of decades past more than the modern films but, lately, the studios have actually been producing movies worth watching. The underrated The Possession and the absurdly brilliant Cabin in the Woods were homeruns, as far as I was concerned and now we come to Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate's Sinister.

Those who have followed my work have seen that along with the more recent releases out in theatres I tend to dabble in B-movie shenanigans as well. One thing that most don't know about me is that I have adored horror cinema nearly all my life.
