Dallas Comic Con Cosplay: Part One

2013's Dallas Comic Con was a spectacular event with thousands of attendees.  Hundreds of fans came dressed in costume, either for the big cosplay contest on Saturday or just for the fun of it.  Your favorite zeitgeeks.com reporter was there to chronicle the awesome costumes.

Star Trek Into Darkness: Science-Fiction Spectacle At Its Finest?

JJ Abrams takes us back to the Enterprise for another journey with Kirk and crew. The sequel delivers the goods on action and brings us more of the epic bromance of Spock and Kirk. Is it, however, a good movie? Is it more than just a colorful spectacle and special-effects bonanza? IS it, more importantly, a good Star Trek movie? Read on, Vulcans.

The Fine Art of Trailers (May 13th-17th)

I have been enamored with movie trailers since I was but a wee Scrivener taking in a picture show at the local cinema. There is almost a science to cutting a good one. If the editor/marketing team make poor choices in showcasing content it can totally sink the buzz of any upcoming movie. A good trailer can also get people to come to a film that, honestly, might not be so great. It is, however, with great glee that I want to make this a weekly feature. I'll showcase some of the best trailers of the week. Enjoy!

Iron Man 3 - The Unxpected Superhero Sequel

Iron Man 3 isn't just another threequel or what we've come to expect from typical superhero films. Shane Black delivers a third installment that not only serves up jaw-dropping action but helps to give rebirth to Tony Stark. It is not only a superb stand-alone sequel that doesn't bother tying into future films but is tremendous addition to the Marvel canon. Seriously. It's awesome.

Bioshock Infinite

A scene of crashing ocean waves, a rowboat and a distant lighthouse greet us first Biblical verses festoon the walls though more disturbing are the heinous crimes committed within. Ascension to the top of the lighthouse reveals that your journey has only just begun. Columbia awaits. It is there you will see a splendiferous floating city full of life and happiness. It is at a local raffle that you are then forced to look directly upon the sins of America. Questions need to be answered and they await at the end of a gun.

Hannibal - Hallucinogenic, bloody and brilliant

Hannibal Lecter. It is a name that goes right along the greatest monsters of cinema. Hopkins portrayal of him in Silence of the Lambs is something that has become ingrained in the pop culture conscious. Brian Cox provided a much better Hannibal, I always thought, in the first adaptation Manhunter of the original Thomas Harris works. Here we have a new actor taking up the mantle, Mads Mikkelsen whom you might remember from Casino Royale. Bryan Fuller, famous for his humorous turn on death in shows like Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me channels his creative superpowers and brings us a new entry into the serial killer genre that is lucid, unfolds like some sort of awful dream and quite often showcases gore. It is also eloquent and full of brilliant dialogue and a quiet horror that has been sorely missing from a show about serial killers. I'm looking at you, Dexter. It is police procedural, yes, but it is also so much more than that.
